Agriculture 90% of the District popualtion is engaged in agricutural activities. Taditional agricultural techiniques, often archaic land utilisation and poor application of modern farm fertilisers ultimetely lead to diminished production.
Livestock Farming The total numbere of livestock is low at about 13,808 bovines; 49,446 goats; 7,876 sheep; 901 pigs and 18,951 rabbits (2006survey). The district has made great strides in improving agriculture especially in fighting soil erosion that had become a major bottle-neck to the development of the sector in the district. All farmers were sensitized to fight soil erosion through practicing the following:
- To dig holes and plant there grass and currently 4000 ha of land that was in danger of being affected by soil erosion have been covered
Fruits growing has increased in Rusizi
- To make radical terraces on 184 ha of land which has greatly improved the agricultural output of the district and improving the populations income.
- To practice mixed cropping especially emphasizing on planting trees in crop gardens as a means to hold the soil intact and improving on the soil fertility.
-To practice crop rotation as a means of improving the soil fertility.
-To tap running water from houses that can be used for domestic thus reducing the amount of water on the ground.
- Planting of trees in form of forest that acts as wind breakers.
The district of Rusizi also sensitized people on how to use fertilizers using less costly means especially in the production of rice,coffee, and tea which are considered the major cash crops of the district.
